What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root that is placed beneath the gumline, directly into a patient’s jawbone. The implant itself is a small, screw-like rod that’s made from biocompatible materials, including titanium – this allows it to safely fuse with a patient’s jawbone tissue, establishing it as a replacement tooth root. After this fusion, a custom-made dental restoration can be used to replace the visible, chewing surface of the tooth/teeth.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

The dental implant process can often be categorized into four primary steps:

  1. Initial Consultation – You’ll meet with us at our office first, so we can examine your smile, take X-rays, and make sure implants are the right option for your tooth loss. Some patients may need preliminary treatments, like bone grafting or periodontal therapy.
  2. Dental Implant Surgery – We’re fortunate to be able to complete the whole dental implant process here at our Jupiter office. As for the actual surgery, you can expect it to take around 1 to 2 hours per implant.
  3. Osseointegration/Abutment – Following your procedure, your implant posts will need several months to fuse with your jaw. Once this has happened, you’ll return for a second, smaller procedure to receive your abutments, which connect to your custom restoration.
  4. Delivery of Restoration(s) – After your mouth has fully healed, you’ll come back to receive your new set of teeth. Designed to look and function like your original pearly whites, we’ll make sure everything looks and feels normal before sending you on your way!

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants don’t just replace missing teeth; they impart all kinds of life-changing benefits to patients, including perks like:

  • Dental implants are the only type of restoration that can replace a lost tooth’s entire structure from root to crown.
  • Dental implants prevent jawbone resorption, which commonly occurs following tooth loss. The implant posts stimulate the jaw and encourage it to grow, exactly how your natural tooth roots do.
  • With excellent care, dental implants are capable of lasting for multiple decades or even a lifetime. Better yet, maintaining them is fairly easy; you just need to brush and floss like usual!

Who Dental Implants Can Help

What makes dental implants so outstanding is their versatility; they can be used to assist patients suffering from all degrees of tooth loss. Whether you’ve lost a single tooth or you’ve been without your complete smile for quite some time, our team can utilize this treatment to fully address your tooth loss.

Missing One Tooth

A single dental implant post can be placed in the gap where a tooth was lost, without disturbing any of the neighboring teeth. Once this post has healed, a single dental crown can be placed on top to perfectly mimic the lost tooth.

Missing Multiple Teeth

Partial dentures and bridges can also be combined with dental implants to replace multiple missing teeth. This gives the restoration the strength and support needed to replace the functionality of the lost teeth.

Missing All Teeth

A full denture can be anchored to the jawbone, often using four or more dental implant posts that are strategically placed into the jawbone. Compared to removable dentures, this option is longer-lasting, easier to maintain, and undeniably more functional.

Understanding the Cost of Dental Implants

You should know that when it comes to dental implant placement, there isn’t a true “set cost” since every person’s circumstances are unique, and everyone experiences tooth loss differently. In any case, during your consultation we’ll carefully review every relevant cost factor with you and consider how your insurance benefits might play a part. Remember, although dental implants do come with a higher upfront cost, the price is directly reflected in their superior results!
